National Insurance Crime Bureau Data Highlights Surge in Stolen Vehicles
DES PLAINES, IL, JUNE 14, 2023 — As part of a story on the national spike in vehicle thefts, CBS News reported data this week from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) that showed more than one million vehicles were stolen in 2022, the highest number since 2008. It also reported that NICB’s foreign operations unit repatriated more than 2,000 stolen vehicles that had been trafficked to foreign countries in 2022.
As car thefts spike, many thieves slip through U.S. border unchecked

More than one million cars were stolen in 2022, the highest number since 2008, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the insurance industry's association that tracks annual vehicle thefts.
That's about two vehicles stolen every minute.
The trend impacts consumers whether their car was stolen or not.
"Increased crime rates are going to translate to [paying] a higher premium for your vehicle," said NICB President and CEO David Glawe.
